Reading is not what I do for fun... but I'm hoping the more I do it, the more fun it becomes. Is that even possible? I hope so. So somebody (bf) convinced me to read for fun the other night. So I picked up a book that I have read on and off "The Reason for God" by Tim Keller.
And it was fun, believe it or not.
One point that I wanted to pass along to blog readers was the argument Keller made about the Bible not being a legend. Unfortunately a lot of people think the Bible is just a bunch of crazy stories put together. Keller talks about how studies show that modern fiction is way different from ancient fiction. Ancient fiction did not try to make things seem real at all-- many myths were very "out there", "detail-less", and well... very mythical. If you read the Bible, it is FULL of details. How many fish were caught, where exactly disciples traveled, and the hours spent praying. These details confirm that these ancient writings were not in fact ancient fiction.
Another Quick Fact: Paul wrote about Christ 15-20 years after Jesus rose from the dead. Many witnesses of the resurrection were still alive to see what Paul had written. Do you think that if what Paul had written about Christ was false that people would have just let it be accepted publicly? I don't think so. Christianity would not have flourished as it did if what Paul was proclaiming publicly was untrue, because the actual witnesses would have revealed its falsehood.
These are encouraging truths to me. While I know that I can have faith without knowing these details, it is all the more uplifting to know the evidence and reason behind the Bible's validity.
